Platform Pedals

I have completely evolved from clipless pedals & Shimano shoes to platform pedals for bicycle touring.

Back in the 1970s, it was Straps and clips on the pedals. They seemed necessary and I used them for years.

Old style

Then I migrated to the Clip-In Pedal and shoes... but for touring, I had one side of the pedal a platform and that seemed to be the best way to go for starting and stopping a heavy touring bicycle.

Clip in

Eventually, the need for specific shoes became a big question mark for my needs and the increase risk of falling.  I was really not certain if I was gaining much by 'clipping in'.

I switched to platform pedals that had little cleats that work to grip shoe bottoms nicely to prevent slippage and hold the shoe in place.

I now have more options in biking shoe selection and walking while off of the bike is much easier.

The initial start process is much easier now not having to do that initial "clip in" movement and pedal spin... less chance of falling on starts and stops.

I have not noticed any issues in peddling efficiencies.
